Learning Style for Student Nurses - 1522 Words

In this essay I will be discussing the importance of understanding learning styles for student nurses. I will also be focusing on the learning cycle and learning style using the Honey and Mumford 80 questionnaire. I look into the details of how learning style helps students to understand the importance of recognising one’s learning style preference. I will also provide an understanding of learning and learning theories and discuss my own dominant learning style and how I aim to deal with my weaknesses to progress well in the nursing programme. Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it†¦show more content†¦The behaviourist approach, used by Pavlov and Skinner (1927 and 1952 cited in Gould, 2009), established that learning is change in behaviour brought about by experience. Studies and research have proven that we can voluntarily and involuntary respond to certain stimuli, and what we have learnt from previous experience. Such associative behaviour can condition our response to our way of learning and shape our learning style (Yildirim Ozkahraman, 2011). Once we have recognised the most predominant learning style we are able to work out how to strengthen the weaker learning style and enhance the dominant. Cottrell (2013) stated that discovering which learning style is best for us can help our learning in the most effective way. There are four stages to the learning cycle, which are included in the four distinct learning styles. The first stage is ‘having an experience’ reactively, which allows the experience to come to us without making much effort to seek it, in contrast to proactively whereby we seek out the experience. The second stage is reviewing or reflecting on the experience. Reflecting on experience is vital and it plays an important role in learning. The third stage is concluding from the experience and lastly planning the next steps to enable the learner to have an action plan for what is required to be done (Honey and Mumford 2006).
